Prof. Daniel Harlov from Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum Visits IGCAS TEXT SIZE: A A A

Invited by Prof. CHEN Wei at the State Key Laboratory of Ore Deposit Geochemistry (SKLODG), Prof. Daniel Harlov from Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), Potsdam, Germany visited the institute during June 13th -20th.

Prof. Daniel Harlov presented two talks entitled "Fluids, Accessory Minerals, and Geochronology: Charting and Dating Mass Transfer during Metamorphism" and "Fluid-aided alteration of monazite and xenotime as a result of coupled dissolution-reprecipitation: Resetting the monazite and xenotime geochronometer during high-grade metasomatism in metamorphic and igneous rocks" on June 14th and 17th, respectively. These talks were hosted by Prof. CHEN Wei, and joined by many researchers and students of the institute.

In his talk, Prof. Harlov illustrated how zircon, monazite and xenotime were modified by different fluids during metamorphism. Based on the experimental modeling data, he proposed that the alterations or modifications of these minerals were related to a dissolution-reprecipitation process, and the original ages of the minerals could be totally reset under specific conditions. After the talks, Prof. Harlov also had discussion with the audience regarding the topics including experimental modeling and growth of minerals.

Prof. Daniel Harlov is a recognized expert on experimental modeling of REE mobilization under metasomatic processes. His research focus covers Kiruna-type magnetite-apatite ore deposits and other IOCG deposits, experimental equilibria and metasomatic alteration of zircon, garnet and REE-bearing minerals including apatite, monazite, xenotime, and allanite, as well as the role of fluids and melts during high grade metamorphism. Prof. Daniel Harlov has authored or coauthored more than 160 papers on the geology, mineralogy and geochemistry of various deposits and rocks. He is a Fellow of the American Mineralogical Society, and served as the associate editors of several international journals including American Mineralogist.
