IGCAS Professor LIU Congqiang, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) attended the Eco-Forum Global, Guiyang 2012 by invitation on July 27-28, 2012. He presented two talks focusing on Karst Rocky Desertification and Its Eco-restoration in Southwest China and The impact of Global Nitrogen Biogeochemical Cycling on Ecological Civilization and Social Development, at the High-level Forum and in the thematic discussion session, respectively.
At the High-level Forum on Ecological Conservation and Technological Innovation, Academician LIU Congqiang offered a detailed view of the karst rocky desertification in Southwest China and elucidated the scientific issues in the eco-restoration of karst rocky desertification. His presentation covered the topics including the cause of rocky desertification, the cause of karst landform, the soil formation rate in karst mountain area, the characteristics of the limestone soil, the ecological restoration through human intervention, and the notable issues in the development of agricultural modernization, urbanization and industrialization in karst area.
In the thematic discussion session of “Disaster Preparedness and Early Warning in the Context of Global Climate Change”, Academician LIU Congqiang described in detail the following topics: the human-produced nitrogen fixation promotes social development; A large number of reactive nitrogen not only changes the circulation of the material in nature, but also causes a variety of ecological and environmental issues; Carbon and nitrogen cycles in terrestrial ecosystems are crucially affecting the change of atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, and then interferes with the global climate change, hence promoting better interaction between carbon/nitrogen cycles and the global climate change should favor the social development. Academician LIU Congqiang also answered the audience’s questions such as the suggestions on nitrogen emissions and the issues in nitrate pollution.
Eco-Forum Global, Guiyang 2012 was hosted by The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Committee on Population, Resources, and Environment, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Peking University, and Guizhou Provincial Government. The annual fair has been held for four years since 2009. This forum is dedicated to exploring the theory of eco-civilization, exchanging experience of eco-civilization development, as well as promoting best practices of eco-civilization. So far, this forum has turned into a regular platform attracting more and more government officials, enterprise leaders, experts and scholars to promote and share eco-civilization.
