On May 7 afternoon, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) academicians and experts’ lecture tour titled ‘Science and China’ officially started in Guizhou after the 13th meeting of the second working committee of Science Popularization and Publication of Academic Division of CAS concluding with success in Guiyang.

Hosted by CAS Kunming Branch, Institute of Geochemistry, CAS (IGCAS) and Guizhou Association for Sceince and Technology (GAST), the lecture group of academicians including ZHU Zuoyan, BAI Yilong, YE Hengqiang, FENG Shouhua, WU Changxin, CHEN Yuntai, HONG Maochun, XIA Jianbai, GU Yidong, and GUO Guangcan launched the 4-day lecture tour in Guizhou. 

On the tour, the academicians not only delivered wonderful lectures to the college students, but also talked with them about the student life and personal development. In Guiyang University, GU Yidong presented a report on ‘Space Science - exploration, discovery and innovation’. In Guiyang Medical University, ZHU Zuoyan gave a talk on ‘Transgenic Technology and Its Security Analysis’. In Guizhou University, YE Hengqiang delivered a speech on ‘The discovery and study of quasicrystals – interpretation of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2011’. In Guizhou Normal University, CHEN Yuntai lectured on ‘Earthquake and Earthquake Disaster Prevention’. In Guizhou University of Finance and Economics, WU Changxin presented ‘Food Safety: From Farm, to Home’.

Each lecture on the tour attracted a full house audience and was warmly received by the faculty and students. The audience commented that this event had brought them into closer contact with these top scientists, and the interactions with these academicians had offered them a further understanding of the charm of science.

Sponsored by CAS, the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, Chines Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the China Association for Science and Technology, the lecture tours of ‘Science and China’ have built a communication platform between the academicians/experts and the public in the form of lectures. So far, the tours have delivered more than 400 lectures, visited over 30 regions throughout the country and evoked strong public reactions. Aiming to enable closer contacts with the top scientists for the public and share the beauty of science and the charm of the scientists with the public, the lectures tours cover a wide range of topics, including the development history of science and technology, the hot topics of frontier science and technology, the construction of scientific ethics, the development of science, technology and economy, and the social progress promoted by science and technology.

With the curtain dropped on the lecture tour on May 10, the successful hosting of the event by CAS Kunming Branch, IGCAS and GAST was fully affirmed by the lecture group of academicians.
