At the invitation of Professor Hong Bing of the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry (SKLEG), Professor Jorge Rabassa, a Principal Investigator of Argentina CADIC-CONICET visited Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGCAS) from September 19th to September 23rd.
On the morning of September 20th, Professor Rabassa gave two excellent presentations titled “Chronology of the Patagonian glaciations since the late Miocene” and “The impact of global change on the glaciers of South America, with emphasis in Patagonia and Tierra Del Fuego” to the researchers and students at the institute. His presentations provided the details on the research progresses of chronology of the Patagonian glaciations since the late Miocene, and the glacial variations in Patagonia and Tierra Del Fuego under the influence of today’s global change, respectively. The climate change of north hemisphere is usually better known than that of south hemisphere. Those two presentations have allowed the audience to straightforwardly understand the current regional climate change of the southern hemisphere (especially the area close to the Antarctic continent), and its correlation with global climate change. The audience was deeply impressed by Professor Rabassa’s richly-illustrated presentations. During his 3-hour presentations, Professor Rabassa also had a thorough discussion with the audience, and answered many questions.

On the afternoon of September 20th, Professor FENG Xinbing, Deputy Director of IGCAS met with Professor Rabassa. Both of them expressed the willingness to strengthen the academic cooperation and communication between IGCAS and CADIC-CONICET, and prepared to sign a bilateral agreement soon on the future cooperation of science and technology.
During his stay, Professor Rabassa visited SKLEG, SKLODG (State Key Laboratory of Ore Deposit Geochemistry) and Puding Karst Ecosystem Monitoring Station. He also had multi-faceted academic discussion with the researchers and students from different research groups.
Professor Rabassa has served as a principal investigator of Argentina CADIC-CONICET since 1995. Currently he is a full-time professor at Patagonia University and works part-time at many other universities in Argentina. Professor Rabassa has long been engaged and made substantial achievements in the research areas of glaciology, quaternary geology, topography, paleoclimate and global change. Professor Rabassa has also served in the editorial board of several world famous academic journals including Quaternary Science Reviews, Journal of Quaternary Sciences and Geomorphology.
