China launched its second unmanned lunar probe, Chang’e-2 on October 11, 2010. The faculty and students of the Lunar and Planetary Science Research Center (LPSRC) in the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGCAS) witnessed the glorious moment by watching the live broadcast together.

While watching the show, interviewed by Guizhou TV, Prof. LI Xiongyao explained IGCAS’s contribution to Chinese moon mission and described the basic information of Chang’e-2 satellite.

According to Dr. LI Xiongyao’s introduction, scientific objectives of Chang’e Project were proposed by Academician OUYANG Zhiyuan, professor of LPSRC in IGCAS, through ten years of great efforts of his team. Scientific objectives of moon mission include not only to study the moon, but also to involve other scientific fields such as global environmental change on Earth, the formation of solar system. LPSRC in IGCAS bears the task of data analysis for Chang’e Project.

The successful launch of Chang’e-2 is of great significance to the implementation of moon mission. It conducts more detailed lunar surface exploration research based on Chang’e-1’s work, and it also collects detailed topographic information for Chang’e-3 landing vehicle. Furthermore, the use of S-band monitoring by Chang’e-2 offers preliminary test and practice to the future exploration of deep space.
