Abstract: The relationship between foliar carbonic anhydrase activity and δ13C of Broussonetia papyrifera, Toona sinensis, Lonicera japonica, Rhus chinensis and other plant species was analyzed. The results showed thatthere was a significantly positive correlation between foliar carbonic anhydrase activity and δ13C. The information on bicarbonate used by plants was obtained via determining foliar stable carbon isotopic composition and net photosynthetic rate ofBrassica napus, Orychophragmus violaceus, Broussonetia papyrifera and Morus alba. The results showed that the bicarbonate-use capacity of Broussonetia papyrifera and Orychophragmus violaceus was greater than that of Morus alba and Brassica napus. The variability of foliar carbonic anhydrase activity and δ13C in Broussonetia papyrifera, Brassica juncea and Orychophragmus violaceus was studied. The results showed that the δ13C values of Broussonetia papyrifera, and Orychophragmus violaceusindicated greater variability. The bicarbonate-use capacity of plants was related to foliar carbonic anhydrase activity and the adaptability to karst, and plants can use bicarbonate as inorganic carbon sources, alternatively.

Key words: bicarbonate-use capacity; stable carbon isotopic composition; carbonic anhydrase; the adaptability to karst
