Fig. Morphology of apatite from Vulcano island, Italy.
Abstract: Volatile compositions in apatite can indicate magma evolution and eruptive-chamber modelling. The volatile in apatites from Vesuvio and Volcano islands was studied with SEM\EDS, EPMA, XRD and IR and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that main substitution among F-OH-Cl ions occurs in structural channel, and there is little substitution for the Ca sites and tetrahedral sites. The apatite from Volcano Island contains less S and much Cl, and with a small cell parameter ratio c/a, indicating the condition of lower pressure and higher temperature. On the other hand, channel ions in the apatite from Vesuvio are mainly OH-F, crystallized from a higher pressure and lower temperature zoned magmatic chamber, in which Cl volatile enrichs in the upper chamber meanwhile F in the lower part.
