Abstract:The release of endogenous phosphorus ( P ) from sediments often affects the lake eutrophication significantly. Here, the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme ( SMT) based sequential extraction method was applied to quantify different forms of phosphorus in surface lake sediments of Wanghu, Daye, Cihu, Liangzi, Baoan and Zhupo lakes in eastern Hubei Province, to explore the P occurrence and bioavailability in the aforementioned lakes. The results show that (1) the total P ( TP) content in lake sediments in southeastern Hubei ranged from 395. 81 to 1 400 mg / kg. (2) The TP content was dominated by inorganic P ( IP) , accounting for 50% -90% of TP, followed by calcium-bound P (Ca-P, 94. 53-542. 85 mg / kg) , iron-aluminum-bound P ( Fe / Al-P, 44. 04-461. 90mg / kg) and organic P (OP, 22. 59-171. 27 mg / kg. (3) The TP content correlated significantly and positively with Fe / Al-P, Ca-P. Multiple comparisons revealed significant differences in P contents among the lakes investigated. Geological background, human activities, distribution of aquatic plants and hydrodynamic conditions in the basin are the major factors influencing the distribution of different P forms in lakes. 4) The contents of bioavailable P (BAP) were 68. 26-717. 3 mg / kg, which were lower than those of the Huayang Lake Group in the same region, but the spatial distribution of BAP in sediments was similar to Fe / Al-P. Based on the vertical distribution of Fe / Al-P along the sediment core and the occurrence of sediment phosphorus, the industrial and the agricultural sewage and fish farming activities were the prominent sources for endogenous P accumulated in sediments.
