Abstract:To analyze the spatio-temporal variation of vegetation coverage and its change responding to the terrain factors from 2003 to 2011 in watershed of Zhuxi River, China and to provide reference for the region to further control of soil erosion and ecological restoration engineering. Based on the RS and GIS technology, the dimidiate pixel model was applied to calculate the regional vegetation fraction distribution, by using the center of gravity model and the topography response index to characterize the spatio-temporal variation of vegetation coverage. Results show that (1)the vegetation coverage in watershed of Zhuxi River was holistically in a rising trend, and the area proportion of Ⅳ andⅤ types were up to 62.28%. On the spatial dynamics, the center of Ⅰ andⅡ type were shifting northeast, and that of Ⅲ,Ⅳ andⅤ types was shifting southwest, presenting an increasing pattern in the middle and the west, and a decreasing pattern in the east;(2) at the altitude of 0~300m and in micro slop(<5°) and steep slop(>35°),all types of vegetation coverage have a significant area change. Management measures are effective and performed. The area of Ⅰ coverage type between at altitude of 450~500m is increasing which should be paid attention to by correlated departments. During the past eight years, the basin’s vegetation coverage has been greatly improved with obvious difference of each vegetation coverage type under different terrain conditions..
