Abstract: Relationship between humification degree and loss-on-ignition was investigated based on four peat profiles of Butuo, Hongyuan, Lajishan and Ebo, on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that variations in humification degree coincided well with organic matter. Our study shows that humification degree of peat on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau can effectively reflect organic matter contents in the Holocene warm-wet monsoon climate, so it can be used as the proxy index of organic matter. The alkali-extraction solution was used to determine the humification degree. This method consumes a little of solid sample, so in the condition of a small amount of sample (for example, peat drilling), using peat humification degree as the proxy index of organic matter has great significance for promotion.

Key words: loss-on-ignition; organic matter; humification degree
