Abstract: Based on the data obtained by multi- purpose regionalgeochemical survey in the Haidong area, Qinghai, a study was carried out to find out the cause of heavy metal anomalies in large area in the soil around the Minhe-Haishiwan area, Qinghai, by using correlation analysis and then factor analysis. It was suggested that human activities, like industrial production and transportation, caused the anomalies of heavy metals such as Cd, Hg and Pb on the soil surface; Cr was not only related to human activities, but also to the inherent geochemical characteristics of the parent materials in the soil. Slag, coal dust had limited impact on the formation of heavy metal anomalies in large area; while atmospheric dust produced by industrial emission, coal burning and motor vehicle exhaust, was the main source of anomalies. This study provided important reference for eco-environmental assessment and pollution prevention.
