Abstract:As a typical clay mineral, montmorillonite(Mt)has 2D layered structure and exchangeable interlayer cations, and its structure and properties can be easily modified; in addition, Mt is relatively cheap, readily available, and environmentally friendly. Because of these properties, Mt itself and its modified products have found wide applications in environmental remediation areas. This article reviewed the recent advances of the modified Mt in environmental remediation area. By combining the results from experimental work with molecular modeling, recent studies clarified the microstructure and sorptive mechanisms of organo-Mt; in addition, novel modification methods were developed to improve environmental remediation efficiency of the modified Mt; moreover, nanoparticles were applied to modify Mt, and the resulting materials showed high performance for contaminant removal.

Key words:montmorillonite contaminant removal sorption catalysis
