Abstract: The numerical simulation, including various simulations based on first principals’ molecular dynamics (FMPD) and quantitative calculation of mineral components using the Rietveld technique and computation technologies etc. is a vitally important approach for the scientific research. It has been widely used to predict the chemical reaction process and result of specific reactants, property changes of materials, medicine development and so on. It has also been applied ubiquitously to the field of Earth sciences including the simulation and prediction of underground water quantity and quality and transportation of contaminants in groundwater, the weather forecast and rainfall prediction in the meteorology field, A simulation study on the structure of the Earth sphere the simulation study on spherical structures of the Earth, the simulation and prediction of ore-forming process and so on. This review mainly focuses on the application status of numerical simulation techniques in different fields of Earth sciences, and also analyzes its application prospects in future. We suggest that the numerical simulation shall be applied vigorously in the earth science research, especially in experimental studies involving the “water-rock” reaction process in order to improve the experimental efficiency and to carry out effective scientific experiments. In addition, we suggest that the numerical simulation techniques shall be used to provide theoretical support for interpreting data scientifically.
