Abstract: The Late Permian Emeishan basalts are widely distributed in the southwestern part of the Sichuan Province. The basaltic magma was ascended principally along the Panxi fracture zone and sub-ordinary fractures, erupted mainly as flooded phase, and distributed in forms of marine and marine-continental interbedded basalt phases in the Yanyuan and Miyi counties, with several eruptive rhythmic cycles. These very thick bedded basalts are ideal for producing basaltic fibers. In this study, the Emeishan basalts distributed in large area and great thickness in seven counties with convenient transportation have been selected to carry out route geological profile investigation, sampling, and chemical analysis. The results show that major elements of basalts in Yanyuan County are composed of 53.00% SiO2, 14.58% Al2O3, 8.43% CaO, 5.07% MgO, 10.35% Fe2O3 + FeO, 4.36% K2O + Na2O, and 1.62% TiO2, and those of basalts in Miyi County are composed of 51.55% SiO2,13.62% Al2O3, 6.87% CaO, 5.78% MgO, 11.33% Fe2O3 + FeO, 3.56% K 2O + Na2O, and 2.42% TiO2.Chemical compositions of these basalts are consistent with the industrial standard of fiber-produced basalt. The great thicknesses of them (900m and 823m, respectively) imply that they have spectacular reserve with extensively exploitable and applicable values. It will play an active role in promoting the development of basalt fiber industry in Sichuan Province.
