Abstract: Rare earth elements in the weathering crust of Emeishan basalt in the Weining district, Western Guizhou, have been studied to undertake the leaching experiment and to discuss the occurrence state of rare earth elements. The experimental results indicate that the average REE content of samples from the Zhejue and Haiwai basalt weathering crust profiles is 1086.66×10-6 with the highest value of 2828.91×10-6. Therefore, the basalt weathering crust could be a potential weathering crust-type REE resource. However, the average REE leaching rate is only 7.14% with the decrease of REE leaching rates from claystone to siltstone and tuffaceous claystone, indicating that the proportion of ion adsorption phase of REE is very low, and the REE occurrence state in the basalt weathering crust is not dominated by the ion adsorption type. On the basis of the current REE utilization techniques, the ion adsorption phase REE resource is the capably utilized REE resource. Therefore, the REE resource in the weathering crust of Emeishan basalt in the Weining district cannot be comprehensively utilized yet at present.
