Abstract: The conventional gemological and spectral characteristics of newly appeared Laos Tianhuang Stone in recent years have been analyzed by using refractometer, hydrostatic weighing method, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), with analogical study of the Shoushan Tianhuang Stone in this paper. The experimental results show that both the Laos and Shoushan Tianhuang Stones are mainly composed of kaolin-group minerals with similar conventional gemological properties. The Laos Tianhuang Stone is mainly composed of dickite, kaolinite, and dick-kaolinite transition minerals with no nacrite, which is like dickited Shoushan Stone (n Gaoshan Stone). The Shoushan Tianhuang Stone is mainly composed of dickite, kaolinite, and nacrite, with muscovite locally.
