Abstract:Recently application of iron oxide in the wastewater treatment and environmental pollution control has gained comprehensive attention. In this paper, startup and operation performance of denitrifying biological filter filled with limonite and quartz was investigated. Results show that the biological filter using limonite was easier to achieve the stable stage. The influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the operation performance was studied with the influent being composed of COD concentration of 400 mg/L, NO3--N concentration of 100 mg/L at pH 7.50±0.15 and 20± 3℃. When HRT was 4 h, the removal efficiency of NO3--N was higher than 99%. When HRT was 1 h, the removal efficiency of NO3--N in the filter with limonite remained above 98%. However, the filter with silicon was only 83% and nitrite was detected in the effluent with the maximum concentration of 0.9 mg/L. Results indicate that limonite is an ideal filling material for the denitrifying biological filter.
