Abstract: Four different kaolin samples from Xinwumian of Hepu Area, Guangxi Province, China were studied as primary materials to determinate their particle size distribution, whiteness, chemical components, mineral association and morphological characteristics. Then the transformation heats and phase changes during thermal treatment were revealed by DSC-TG-DTG measurements. Results indicate that grain classification, impurity elements, mineral facies and kaolinite crystallinity restrict phase transformations of kaolin during heating. A series of parameters in DSC-TG-DTG curve including weight loss in TG curve, temperature and area of endothermic valley in DTG curve and temperature, area and shape index of thermal reaction in DSC curve reveal clearly the difference caused by these factors.
