Abstract: Kaolinite-silane compounds were prepared through intercalation and displacement of Zhangjiakou kaolinite with dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and a reaction liquid composed of different proportions of APTES and methanol. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the kaolinite and its intercalation compounds. Results show that the addition of methanol in APTES can reduce kaolinite-silane compounds’ basal spacing. The TEM imagines show that the kaolinite-silane compounds show clear scroll and exfoliation with the addition of methanol. The above-mentioned phenomena is due to γ-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS) generated by the reaction of APTES and methanol being intercalated into the interlayer of kaolinite with APTMS molecules.
