AbstractAmphibole and pyroxene minerals are an important component of the inosilicate minerals group. Many of these mineral species, which have important value in mineral genesis research and industrial application development, belong to the group of rock forming minerals and/or industrial minerals. Basic knowledge and understanding of the two groups is derived primarily from Systematic Mineralogy (Wang et al., 1984) interiorly. With the development of science and technology and intensive study of mineralogy, original mineral based data, classification and nomenclature have been constantly updated and perfected. Thus far, professional academic institutions and scholars have already published different revisions or amendments for the two groups, but there was no uniform approach. This has led to disagreement with respect to the classification, nomenclature and international standard in research involved of these minerals. In this paper, combined with our research mission from the National Public Scientific Research Project “The New Systematic Mineralogy” and the research progress both at home and abroad, the classification and nomenclature of the amphibole and pyroxene group minerals have been systematically summarized and have been aligned with international standards as set out by the IMA.

Keywords: amphibole group; pyroxene group; classification and nomenclature; summarizing of progress; systematic mineralogy
