Abstract: Kaolinite was treated by intercalation and by repeated washing with dimethylsulfoxide and deionized water. The products were analyzed using XRD, FT-IR, MAS NMR, and SEM. This study found that after 10 times repeated intercalation and washing, the crystallinity of kaolinite broke down and its structure suffered some damage but did not collapse. The result of MAS NMR demonstrated that the Si spectrum did not show any obvious changes. The Al spectrum displayed a chemical shift change of 3.5×10-6. However, the degree of polymerizetion of Si and Al remained unchanged and the kaolinite maintained its original layered structure. Furthermore, as the more times it was washed, the more stacked sheets of kaolinite broke down and crystalline damaged occurred.

Key words: kaolinite; repeated intercalation; chemical shift; polymerization degree
