Abstract: The analysis of deposit characteristics, chemical composition, crystal structure, spectral characteristics, microscopic morphology and physicochemical properties of four chrysotile asbestos samples from the asbestos deposit in Hongliugou, Akesai, Gansu Province, China were studied using various analytical methods, such as XRF, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TG-DTA, etc. Results show that in addition to the main SiO2 and MgO chemical composition of the chrysotile asbestos samples are, they also contain Al2O3, Fe2O3 and a small amount of NiO, amongst others.. The chrysotile’s crystal structure is typical of clinochrysotile. The absorption peaks of interior / exterior hydroxyl and Si-O stretching vibration are very sharp and clearly distinct. The chrysotile is made up of soft silky fibers, and its structure breaks down at temperatures ranging between from 650―700 ℃. The amount of acid corrosion of the chrysotile fibers is between 43.67% and 59.89%, while the amount of alkali corrosion is between 2.72% and 7.01%. The mineralogical characteristics of the deposit indicate that the chrysotile asbestos deposit suffered low grade geochemical destruction after it formed. Consequently it has a simple mineral association and the chrysotile exhibits a complete surface structure.
