Abstract:Strontium is a common divalent alkaline earth trace element. Its ionic radius and chemical character are similar to that of calcium. Strontium can substitute for calcium during biomineralization. The concentration of strontium isotopes and Sr/Ca ratio in organisms and fossils can be used as geochemical proxies. This article focuses on the latest trends and progress with respect to strontium biomineralization, strontium geochemical proxy for paleoenvironment reconstructions, the factors and mechanisms influencing strontium geochemical proxy measurements, and so on. It will provide a reference for further study and application in geochemistry, environment and medical applications based on the biomineralization of strontium.
Key words:stontium; biomineralization; geochemical proxy; paleoenvironmental reconstruction; vital effects
