Professor Sune Svanberg visted IGCAS TEXT SIZE: A A A

As invited by the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry, Professor Sune Svanberg from Lund Laser Centre, Lund University, Sweden visited Institute of Geochemistry during 19th November to 22th November.

Prof. Sune Svanberg is a member of the Nobel Prize Committee for Physics since 1998 (chairman during 2004-2006). He is a professor and head of the Atomic Physics Division at Lund Institute of Technology. In 1995 he was appointed director of the newly established Lund Laser Centre, which also gained the EC status of a European Large Scale Facility. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Optical Society of America and is the recipient of the first EPS Quantum Electronics Prize (1996) and recepient of the first Azko Nobel Science Award (1999). 2004 he was awarded the SKAPA Innovation Prize, and in 2005 the W.E. Lamb Award in Quantum Electronics. He is the coauthor of about 500 scientific papers and more than 20 patents and patent applications.

Prof. Sune Svanberg gave a speech entitled “Monitoring of Atmospheric Mercury using Lidar Techniques” on 19th November. Vice director of Institute of Geochemistry Shijie Wang given the welcome presentation and a brief introduction of Prof. Sune Svanberg.

First, Prof. Sune Svanberg introduced his collaboration with some universities and institute in China on the application of LIDAR. Then he explained the fundamental principle of LIDAR technique and introduced the application of LIDAR technique to monitor atmospheric mercury and mercury flux in mercury mining areas, such as Abbadia San Salvatore mercury mine in Italy, Almaden mercury mine in Spanish and Idrija mercury mine in Slovenia. He expected the collaboration with mercury group in State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry in atmospheric mercury monitoring in Wanshan mercury mining area.

During the visiting period, Prof. Sune Svanberg visited Wanshan mercury mine with the staffs in State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry and this was in favor of two sides’ collaboration in near future.
