At the invitation of Prof. FENG Xinbin of State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry (SKLEG), Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGCAS), Dr. ZHANG Chaosheng from GIS Centre, Ryan Institute , National University of Ireland, Galway came for a visit to SKLEG, IGCAS on April 25th, 2012.

As part of his visit, Dr. ZHANG Chaosheng gave a presentation on the topic of “Geological Information System (GIS)” at the lecture hall of SKLEG in the afternoon.  During his one-hour presentation, Dr. ZHANG Chaosheng highlighted the importance of GIS as an innovative way to conduct spatial analysis in geochemical research.  He chose outliers, variation and modeling as three main objects and proposed their corresponding GIS solutions by comparing different spatial analysis methods, and shared a quick image of the advantages of GIS, as well. 

In addition, as the chairman and organizer of 2012 Sino-European Symposium on Environment and Health (SESEH), Dr. ZHANG Chaosheng sent the invitation to the professors in audience to take part in the symposium.

The audience had a lively discussion with Dr. ZHANG Chaosheng following the speech.  Accompanied by the professors of SKLEG, Dr. ZHANG Chaosheng also toured SKLEG after the presentation.

Dr. Chaosheng Zhang is the head of GIS Centre, Ryan Institute , National University of Ireland, Galway.  Dr. ZHANG’s academic background covers both GIS and environmental geochemistry.  His research interest focuses on spatial analyses of environmental variables, especially heavy metals in soils and soil organic carbon, using GIS, geostatistics and other spatial statistical techniques.  One of the current research directions of Dr. Zhang is spatial analyses of environment and health.  Dr. Zhang has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers.
