Dr. GUO Weifu from the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution visits IGCAS TEXT SIZE: A A A

At the invitation of Prof. LIU Yun of State Key Laboratory of Ore Deposit Geochemistry (SKLODG), Dr. GUO Weifu from the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, USA visited IGCAS from April 2 to April 5.

Dr. GUO Weifu received his B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China (Winner of GUO Moruo Scholarship), and Ph.D. degree from the California Institute of Technology (Adviser: Prof. John Eiler), respectively.  He is going to join Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a Scientist as soon as he finishes his current postdoctoral work in the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution.  Dr. Guo Weifu’s research mainly focused on clumped isotope and mass independent sulfur isotope fractionation. His study on kinetic effects of clumped isotope during carbonate growth established the basics for building a new high-precision carbonate paleothermometer.

During his visit in IGCAS, Dr. Guo Weifu had thorough discussions with the group members of Prof. LIU Yun, Prof. FENG Xinbin, Prof. CHENG Jiubin and Prof. LIU Zaihua, respectively.  IGCAS Director HU Ruizhong and Deputy Director WANG Shijie each met with Dr. Guo Weifu, and both Directors encouraged Dr. GUO to build long-term and substantial collaboration with IGCAS along the IGCAS key research directions in Ore Deposit Geochemistry and Environmental Geochemistry.  Dr. Guo Weifu expressed strong willingness for such collaboration, and indicated that a collaborative research with IGCAS on theoretical calculations of the clumped isotope will be carried out soon and the collaboration on experiments will start after his lab in Woods Hole is set up.

During his stay in IGCAS, Dr. GUO Weifu also visited the main equipment facilities of SKLODG and SKLEG, and talked with some young scientists and Ph.D. candidates (FAN Haifeng, ZHOU Jiaxi, QIN Haibo, YAN Hao, CHEN Heng, LIANG Liang, YUAN Jie, ZHANG Jixi etc.).

On the morning of April 4, Dr. GUO Weifu delivered a lecture titled "Clumped Isotope Geochemistry: Beyond Equilibrium Carbonate Thermometry" in the SKLODG lecture hall, which attracted about 40 scientists and graduate students. Dr. GUO’s presentation received active response from the audience and Dr. GUO has answered lots of questions. The presentation was a great success.
