Senior Scientist Dr. LI Chusi of Indiana University Visited IGCAS TEXT SIZE: A A A

On March 14-20, Dr. LI Chusi, 2011 SEG (Society of Economic Geologists) Regional Vice President Lecturer visited the State Key Laboratory of Ore Deposit Geochemistry (SKLODG) of IGCAS.  Dr. LI is currently a Senior Scientist in the Department of Geological Sciences, Indiana University-Bloomington.  He is a Guest Research Fellow of SKLODG since 2009.  Dr. LI was invited by Dr. HU Ruizhong, Director of IGCAS and SKLODG, and a SEG Fellow.

During his visit, Dr. LI discussed with Director Dr. HU and other scientists of SKLODG on various issues of mutual interests including a plan to establish a SEG student chapter at SKLODG in the near future.  Dr. LI also sat down with several graduate students of magmatic ore deposits to discuss some problems in their research.

Dr. LI Chusi gave a presentation entitled "The Jinchuan Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposit in China: Age, tectonic setting, magma evolution, ore genesis and regional exploration” on the afternoon of March 18th.  In his presentation he provided a detailed review of some important issues and different views on the nature of parental magma and tectonic provenance of the Jinchuan Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposit.  Dr. LI pointed out that the idea that the Jinchuan intrusion was part of the so called the Rodinian South China mantle plume is not supported by the contrasting crustal structures between the Yangtze Craton and the Longshoushan Terrane which hosts the Jinchuan intrusion.  Dr. LI believes that the Jinchuan intrusion is evidence of Rodinian high-Mg basatic magmatism in the North China Craton instead of the Yangtze Craton, and that the western part of the North China Craton should be the focus of future exploration for the Jinchuan-type deposits.

Dr. LI’s presentation was an excellent example of constructive criticism in scientific research.  After his presentation, many people in the audience asked questions related to not only the Jinchuan deposit but also the Ni-Cu-PGE potential of the ELIP.
