Prof. C. Michael Lesher visited the State Key Laboratory of Ore Deposit Geochemistry (SKLODG) and delivered a talk on “Petrogenesis and Metallogenesis of the Jinchuan Ni-Cu-(PGE) Deposit, Gansu Province” on Sep.15, 2010.
Prof. C. Michael Lesher is known as a world-class expert on magmatic sulfide deposits, especially for his achievements in the study of komatiite and the associated magmatic sulfide deposits. His model of basal erosion of komatiite lava flows and related Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization has been widely cited. Prof. C. Michael Lesher currently works as the Research Chair in Mineral Exploration in the Department of Earth Sciences, Laurentian University, Canada. Besides the persistent work on Sudbury Complex and Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposits, he also carried out research on Jinchuan deposit in China recently.
In his talk, Prof. C. Michael Lesher discussed the current research status of Jinchuan deposit, described their estimates on the compositions of parent magma of various lithospheric zones, and shared their new thoughts in the mineralization model of Jinchuan deposit. He also compared his research work with that of Prof. SONG Xieyan and his colleagues. Prof. C. Michael Lesher’s research will provide an excellent reference to the Jinchuan deposit research in SKLODG.
